Cost Comparison

Block paving typically costs £60–£120 per m² fully installed, depending on the block specification and laying pattern. A typical double driveway (40–50m²) costs £4,000–£8,000.

Resin bound driveways cost £55–£100 per m² installed over a sound existing surface, or £70–£120 per m² if a new sub-base is required. A typical double driveway costs £3,500–£7,000.

Verdict: Broadly similar cost. Resin can be cheaper if there's a solid existing surface to lay over. Block paving costs more to install but individual blocks are replaceable if damaged, making it more cost-effective over decades.

Block paving gives a classic, structured look with clear joint lines and pattern choices — herringbone, stretcher bond or basketweave. Colours include charcoal, brindle, buff and natural, and the look suits both traditional and modern properties beautifully.

Durability and Lifespan

A correctly installed block paving driveway on a properly compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base will last 25–40 years. The key is the foundation — poor sub-base preparation is the number one cause of block paving problems. Individual blocks can be lifted and replaced if cracked or stained, making long-term maintenance easy.

A resin bound driveway typically lasts 15–25 years. UV-stable resin and quality aggregate are essential — cheap installations can fade or crack within a few years. Resin cannot be repaired block-by-block; if a section is damaged, a patch repair will usually be visible.

Verdict: Block paving lasts longer and is easier to repair over time.

Maintenance

Block paving requires occasional jet washing, re-sanding of joints (every 5–10 years) and weed treatment. Weeds can grow through joints if the jointing sand breaks down. Regular sealing can prevent this.

Resin bound is genuinely low maintenance — no joints for weeds to grow through, and the surface is easy to jet wash. The smooth surface also means no loose stones to scatter onto the road or lawn.

Verdict: Resin bound wins on day-to-day maintenance.

Planning Permission

Both permeable block paving (with open joints filled with kiln-dried sand) and resin bound driveways are SuDS compliant, meaning surface water drains through or into the sub-base rather than running off into the highway. Both are exempt from planning permission under Permitted Development Rights.

Impermeable block paving (sealed or with solid jointing) may require a drainage solution or planning consent. Always check with your installer and local planning authority if in doubt.
