Bath & North East Somerset Council follows national Permitted Development guidance, but the Conservation Area — which covers much of central Bath and the hillside residential areas including Lansdown, Bathwick, Widcombe, Oldfield Park and Weston — is subject to additional planning considerations. Impermeable surfaces in front gardens in the Conservation Area may require planning consent, and some streets require materials sympathetic to the Bath stone character of the surrounding streetscape. Resin bound aggregate in natural buff and honey stone tones, and natural stone block paving, are typically the most appropriate choices and tend to satisfy planning requirements without issue. We advise on this clearly during your free site visit so you know exactly where you stand before committing to anything. Bath's topography is steep — the hills from Lansdown and Larkhall through to Combe Down and Odd Down present drainage and gradient challenges that require careful design. Surface water management is critical on sloping sites, and a channel drain or correctly graded permeable surface is often the right solution. We assess falls and drainage as part of every survey.
