Properties on the valley floors — particularly in Stroud town, Brimscombe and Thrupp — sit on alluvial clay that retains moisture and requires careful sub-base preparation to prevent settlement. On the Cotswold escarpment and hilltop villages — Bisley, Minchinhampton, Rodborough, Nailsworth plateau — ground is typically better-draining limestone or freestone, though tree root zones and narrow access are common considerations. In the Slad, Painswick and Toadsmoor valleys, gradients and drainage design need particular thought. We survey every site individually before agreeing any scope of work. Stroud District Council follows standard national Permitted Development rules. Permeable surfaces are generally planning-free; impermeable surfaces over 5m² in front gardens require consent if they drain to the highway. Stroud town and many of the hilltop villages — Painswick, Minchinhampton, Bisley, Nailsworth — have Conservation Area designations where materials need to be appropriate to the local character.
